Arrowhead Toboggan & Sled Company was founded in 1993 by David Grinnell in Carlton, MN. Dave developed proprietary efficient ways to steam and bend the Northern Minnesota hardwoods that are especially good for making the quality Toboggans the Company is known for. After many years of successfully selling Arrowhead Toboggans all over the world, David decided to retire and began the process of searching for a worthy successor. He wanted someone who he could entrust with the secrets of the business and who had the skills necessary to make the quality handcrafted toboggans he knew was expected. The search wasn’t easy. But, after about 3 years of interviews and searching he found a man he knew could carry on the Arrowhead Toboggan & Sled Company tradition. In June of 2009, Dave Tommerassen of Soudan, MN bought the Arrowhead Toboggan & Sled Company. Dave is an accomplished wood craftsman and master cabinet maker. And, just to make sure the “torch” is handed off smoothly Dave Grinnell (Dave G.) has agreed to stay on with Dave Tommerassen (Dave T.) in an advisory capacity for the foreseeable future. Dave G. has been very pleasantly surprised at the skill and level of proficiency exhibited in the products that Dave T. has already produced and sees that Arrowhead Toboggan and Sled Company has a very bright future under the leadership of Dave Tommerassen. Arrowhead Toboggan & Sled Company hand makes classic Toboggans your grandparents (maybe you remember from your childhood) would feel are from their time with a tight curl at the front and three “runners” underneath. (The outer board and the one in the center are a little thicker than the rest of the boards making the Toboggan track better.) The native Ash is hand selected for each sled and toboggan. Then the wood undergoes a gentle and time consuming process to bend the wood and make the front curl typical of the toboggan. The cross braces are added and the multicoat urethane finish applied. The final touch is the addition of a full length 3/4" high strength rope to hold onto on the downhill slopes and also to attach the optional toboggan pad if desired.
